How to Make the Most of a Small Kitchen

Small kitchen? No problem! In our latest article, we tell you how you can make a tiny kitchen work for you. Read on for our top tips…

Think ‘Height’, Not ‘Width’

So, you may not have the luxury of a large space - and that’s okay. When it comes to making the most of your kitchen, then, that’s where the height of your room comes into its own – especially if you live in a high-ceilinged property.

Take advantage of wall space and utilise some great storage solutions – such as taller cabinetry or plenty of shelving. That way, you can keep your worktops clear, which will give the illusion of more space in your kitchen…result!

Invest in Clever Storage Solutions

We’ve mentioned storage solutions already – and it’s for good reason, particularly where smaller kitchens are concerned. The right storage will transform your space – and there are plenty of options available online.

As ever, Pinterest has you covered; just type ‘small kitchen storage’ into its search box and you’ll find all manner of ideas to help you get the most from your space. Create a Pinterest board, whether you’re redecorating your existing small kitchen or moving into a brand-new home with a small kitchen.

Minimise Clutter

One of the simplest ways to make your space look larger is to minimise the clutter on show. Keep worktops relatively clear, moving larger, countertop appliances (air fryer, anyone?!) into your kitchen cupboards, for instance.

You could pack other appliances away that you use less frequently, too. If you don’t reach for that hot chocolate machine or milk frother too often,  burrow them away and get them out during, say, the colder seasons when you’re ready for something warm and comforting.

Consider the Colour Scheme

Loud, brash walls? Consider a colour scheme that ensures the room looks light, airy, and fresh. It’ll make the space look bigger and won’t cost a fortune.

Plus, go for a neutral colour palette and you can more easily switch up your kitchen accessories (as and when you’d like) or opt for a cooker splashback in a different shade, for example.

Clear Out Your Cupboards

Create extra space in your kitchen by creating extra space in your cupboards. Schedule in a semi-regular clear out and you’ll be glad you did. That way, you can discard expired food tins, plastic food containers with no lids, and anything you no longer use. Clearing space in the cupboards means you’ll now have plenty of room to store that air fryer when you’re not using it!

Buy Multipurpose Gadgets

Do you really need that cake mixer and the separate bread maker you’ve spotted online? After all, many freestanding cake mixers also come with a dough hook, to help you prepare your own bread too. Sure, it won’t bake it for you too, like a bread maker will, but by cutting down from two appliances to just one, you’ll be saving plenty of space in your small kitchen.

Take some time to have a good look through your cupboards and see if you can replace two gadgets with one, saving you the extra space you desire. Simple!
